Antarctica & Polar Circle
Daily Itinerary 12 Days/ 11 Nights
PS89-07
February 3 - 14, 2009
There are several milestones to achieve in an Antarctic expedition. These include crossing the Antarctic Convergence, crossing the Drake and making a continental landing. Expect to achieve all of these on most expeditions but our Polar Circle program also strives to go farther south to cross the Polar Circle at 66°33’S. From there we will wander north again to explore the wonders of the stunning landscapes, visit historic and research sites, penguin rookeries and watch for seals and whales.
DAY 1: (Argentina) Board the M/V Polar Star in Ushuaia to set off on a journey filled with indescribable experiences.
DAYS 2 – 3: The Drake Passage is always a fascinating place – where nature is in charge, albatross wheel overhead and marine wildlife may be spotted happily cruising these waters.
DAYS 4 – 8: (Antarctica) We first head south to attempt to cross the Polar Circle at 66°33’S before going north again through fjords, bays and passageways amongst islands along the peninsula, looking for seals basking on ice floes, whales surfacing and blowing and crowded penguin rookeries. Landings and Zodiac cruises are planned at places such as The Gullet, Detaille, Gerlache Strait, Port Lockroy, Petermann Island, Vernadsky, Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay.
DAY 9: (South Shetland Islands) At the volcanic sites of Whalers Bay on Deception Island and Half Moon Bay expect to see Chinstrap penguin rookeries, haul out sites for Fur seals and perhaps Elephant seals and various seabird species.
DAYS 10 – 11: At sea, take time to recap and reflect as well as watch for marine life from the bridge, decks or observation lounge.
DAY 12: (Argentina) Back in the charming town of Ushuaia, disembark after breakfast.
